Q+A: What is the MWC doing this summer?
the FREE professional development I'm sharing with my best teaching friends
Q: A couple summers ago, the Moving Writers Community had a special summer planner to help us get ready for the upcoming school year. Last year, we did professional summer reading together. What are we doing this year?
A: We are at that horrible, awkward part of the year where some of you have mere hours left in the school year and others have another five weeks. And yet, we are all thinking about summer.
As you know, the bulk of my summer will be spent with Camp Rewrite online and with various school districts in person. And if it’s possible for you, I really hope you’ll be there. (We will accept purchase orders from your school/district and there are partial/complete scholarships available! Reach out to me at movingwriters@gmail.com!)
But, you’re my nearest-and-dearest. I don’t want to leave you hanging!
Here’s what I have cooked up for this space, starting today:
Once a month I’ll put up a recap post that gathers ideas from the MWC into one place including the archives. A post on all writing units. A post on all reading units, etc. Since Substack is perfectly functional but inelegant, it’s nice to gather things periodically so they are easily accessible next school year when you need them. (Beginning in June).
Twice a month I’ll share a professional development webinar from Moving Writers’ PD (from the vault, if you will). You know your membership here entitles you to a free professional development session each year (either recorded or live), so I’m hoping this will give you six additional freebies that can help you prepare for next year! I’ll be picking from my faves as well as some of the most popular topics we’ve offered.
Please note: These posts will not be archived. You will have until September 1 to view these before they go back in the vault.
I hope you’re excited about this and that it feels like the right balance of a-little-something for the summer with time to also recharge your brain.
Are you ready for it?
I’m sharing a favorite first because it’s come up recently in conversation with a couple different school districts. Risk-Free Writing is a fundamental if we want students to grow as writers. It just a have-to. But what are ways we can incorporate risk-free writing into our regular rhythms and routines? Here are a bunch of ideas complete with mentor texts for you to you!
